(Businessweek) – Output in the season that started Oct. 1 is forecast at 24,000 metric tons, up from 19,350 tons a year ago, Muwanga said today by phone from the capital, Kampala. Production may be 50,000 tons in the next five years from less than 5,000 tons almost 20 years ago, he said. Most output is exported in the form of beans due to a lack of processing facilities, he said.

“We have supported a lot of planting and the private sector is also doing a lot,” he said.

Ivory Coast is the world’s largest cocoa producer, with output of more than 1 million tons.
