(American Ag Radio Network) – South Dakota: South Dakota’s October 1 forecast for both corn and soybean production is up from last month, according to the South Dakota Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Corn forecasted production, at 667.2 million bushels, is up from last month’s forecast of 662.4 million bushels and up 17 percent from last year’s level. Yield is forecast at 139.0 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the September forecast and up 4 bushels from last year. Acres to be harvested for grain are forecast at 4.8 million, unchanged from previous forecast and up 580,000 acres from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 158.0 million bushels, up 3 percent from last month and up slightly from last year’s production of 157.3 million bushels. Yield, at 39.0 bushels per acre, is up 1 bushel from last month, as well as last year. Acres for harvest are forecast at 4.05 million, unchanged from the previous forecast but down 90,000 acres from last year.
Sorghum production is forecast at 5.53 million bushels, down 25 percent from last month but up 5 percent from last year. Yield, at 65.0 bushels per acre, is down 5 bushels from last month but up 3 bushels from last year. Grain sorghum harvested acres, forecast at 85,000, are down from previous forecast of 105,000 acres but even with last year’s harvested acres.
All sunflower production is forecast at 839.6 million pounds, up 9 percent from last year. The estimated yield, at 1,786 pounds per acre, is up 225 pounds from last year. Harvested acres, at 470,000, are down 30,000 acres from previous forecast and down 25,000 acres from last year.
Alfalfa hay, with a forecasted production of 5.85 million tons, yielded 2.6 tons per acre from 2.25 million acres harvested. This is 13 percent above last year’s production. Other hay, with a forecasted production of 2.04 million tons, has a yield of 1.7 tons per acre from 1.20 million acres harvested.
Dry edible bean production is forecast at 128,000 cwt. for 2011, down from last year’s productions of 230,000 cwt. Producers plan to harvest 7,100 acres, with a forecasted yield of 1,800 pounds per acre.
North Dakota: Corn for grain production is forecast at 248 million bushels, down 6 percent from the September forecast and virtually unchanged from 2010, according to the USDA, NASS, North Dakota Field Office. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 121 bushels per harvested acre, down 4 bushels from the September forecast and down 11 bushels from 2010. Planted acreage decreased to 2.25 million acres from 2.3 million acres in August. Area to be harvested is estimated at 2.05 million acres, up 9 percent from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 115 million bushels, down 6 percent from the September forecast and 17 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 29.0 bushels per harvested acre, down 1 bushel from September and 5.0 bushels from 2010. Planted acreage decreased to 4.0 million acres from 4.15 million in August. Area to be harvested is estimated at 3.95 million acres, down from 4.07 million acres last year.
Dry edible bean production is forecast at 5.74 million hundredweight (cwt), down 50 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 1,550 pounds per harvested acre, up from 1,490 pounds last year. Planted acres decreased to 410,000 from 420,000 in August. Area for harvest is expected to be 370,000 acres, down 52 percent from last year.
All Sunflower (oil and non-oil) production is forecast at 753 million pounds, down 40 percent from 2010. The average yield for all sunflower is forecast at 1,342 pounds per harvested acre, down from 1,456 pounds last year. Planted acres decreased to 580,000 from 690,000 in June. This includes a 90,000 acre decrease in oil sunflower to 510,000 acres. Area for harvest is 561,000 acres, down 35 percent from 2010.
Canola production is forecast at 1.24 billion pounds, down 43 percent from 2010. If realized, the yield would be 1,460 pounds per acre, down from 1,720 pounds last year. Planted acreage decreased 30,000 acres from June to 860,000 acres. Area for harvest is estimated at 850,000 acres, down 33 percent from 2010.
Planted acreage estimates for selected crops were updated based on a review of administrative data.
Harvested acreages were also updated to reflect the adjustments made to the planted acres.
United States: Corn production is forecast at 12.4 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the September forecast and down slightly from the 2010 production estimate. If realized, this will be the fourth largest production total on record for the United States. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 148.1 bushels per acre, unchanged from the September forecast but down 4.7 bushels from 2010. If realized, this will be the lowest average yield since 2005. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 83.9 million acres, down 1 percent from the September forecast.
Soybean production is forecast at 3.06 billion bushels, down 1 percent from September and down 8 percent from last year. Based on October 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 41.5 bushels per acre, down 0.3 bushel from last month and down 2 bushels from last year. If realized, the average yield will be the second lowest since 2003. Area for harvest is forecast at 73.7 million acres, down slightly from September and down 4 percent from 2010.
Dry edible bean production is forecast at 19.6 million cwt for 2011, down 38 percent from last year. Planted area is estimated at 1.20 million acres, down 37 percent from the previous year. Harvested area is forecast at 1.12 million acres, down 39 percent from the previous year. The average United States yield is forecast at 1,744 pounds per acre, an increase of 18 pounds from 2010.
Sunflower production forecast for 2011 is 2.09 billion pounds, down 24 percent from 2010. Area planted, at 1.54 million acres, is down 12 percent from the August estimate and is the lowest since 1976. Sunflower growers expect to harvest 1.47 million acres, down 12 percent from August and down 21 percent from the 2010 acreage. If realized, harvested area for the Nation will also be the lowest since 1976. The October yield forecast, at 1,420 pounds per acre, is 40 pounds lower than last year’s yield.
Canola production forecast for 2011 is 1.53 billion pounds, down 37 percent from 2010. Area planted, at 1.07 million acres, is down 2 percent from the August estimate and down 26 percent from last year. Canola farmers expect to harvest 1.05 million acres, down 2 percent from August and down 27 percent from 2010. The October yield forecast, at 1,459 pounds per acre, is 254 pounds below last year’s yield. If realized, this will be the fifth highest yield on record for the United States.
