(Agriculture.com) – This week’s USDA Crop Progress report shows that both the corn and soybean crops are in good condition and progressing ahead of schedule.
Three-quarters of the corn crop remains in good to excellent condition, unchanged from last week’s report. Last year only 69% of the corn crop was in good to excellent condition at this time. Just over half of the corn crop is at the silking stage, up from the 46% five-year average.
Soybeans are also holding steady with 71% in good to excellent condition, compared to 62% last year. Just under 60% of soybeans are blooming, compared to the 49% five-year average, and 18% are setting pods, up from the average of 13%.
Al Kluis, Kluis Commodities, says that this report confirms the much ballyhooed corn crop, and the potential for the soybean plants.
“The corn conditions at 76% good-to-excellent is one of the highest ratings ever, for the third week of July,” Kluis says.
Kluis adds, “The corn condition ratings set up a national corn yield of over 170 bushels per acre. The soybean crop is made in August, but is off to a great start.”
