(IDFA) – The U.S. National Committee of the International Dairy Federation (IDF) yesterday endorsed IDF’s declaration to support sustainable development goals, such as providing food security and protecting the environment around the world.  Cary Frye, IDFA senior vice president of regulatory affairs and chair of U.S. IDF, signed an endorsement of the Dairy Declaration of Rotterdam during a committee meeting in Rosemont, Ill., along with Shawna Morris, U.S. IDF vice chair and vice president, trade policy, for the National Milk Producers Federation.

IDF and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) signed the Dairy Declaration of Rotterdam at the World Dairy Summit in November 2016. The declaration recognizes the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as the overarching framework for IDF sustainability actions and announces IDF’s commitment to take an integrated approach to promote sustainability.

“U.S. IDF is proud to join with others around the world endorsing the Dairy Declaration that builds upon the U.S. dairy industry’s commitment to sustainability, resulting in strong environmental, social and economic contributions of dairy,” Frye said in the committee’s press release.

According to Morris, America’s dairy farmers are producing a gallon of milk that uses 65 percent less water, requires 90 percent less land and has a 63 percent smaller carbon footprint than 70 years ago. “The U.S. dairy industry is working together to provide consumers with the nutritious, responsibly produced products they want while continuing to build upon its commitment to providing a sustainable dairy food system in this country,” she said.

More than a dozen countries, including Canada, China, Denmark, France, Ireland, Israel, Poland, The Netherlands and Zimbabwe, have signed similar documents demonstrating the commitment of their dairy sectors.
