(Farm Futures) – Corn’s national condition increased one point to 69% good to excellent as improvements in Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio and South Dakota offset slippage in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Soybeans were unchanged at 63% good to excellent as improvements in Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio and South Dakota, among others, offset slippage in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, the USDA crop progress report said.
Winter wheat slipped to 40% good to excellent from last week’s 41%. The harvest advanced to 55%, which matched last year’s pace but trailed the 59% average.
Soybeans were unchanged at 63% good to excellent as improvements in Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio and South Dakota, among others, offset slippage in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, USDA said this week.
In top producer Iowa, corn slipped 1 point to 82% good to excellent while Illinois dropped to one to 61%
In Indiana, corn stayed at 48% good/excellent after dropping 10 points the week before. Soybeans there slipped to 46% good to excellent from 49%.
“A break in the rainy weather along with mild temperatures reduced some of the ponding and the number of over-saturated fields allowing many farmers to finally apply nitrogen,” the Indiana report said. “While the central and northern regions of the state received a much needed reduction in precipitation, the south continues to experience above average rainfall slowing crop progress.”
Ohio also had a break in the wet weather.
“Spraying resumed vigorously where fields were accessible in hopes of combatting the insect, disease, and weed pressures that flourished in the wet conditions,” the Ohio report said. “Farmers see potential for yield loss in corn and soybeans but the full extent of the damage to these crops won’t be known for some time.”
Nationwide, 12% of the corn was silking, behind last year’s 14% and the average of 18%. Soybeans were 21% blooming, compared with 22% a year ago and the 21% average.
The winter wheat harvest advanced to 55%. The Texas harvest was 87% done, compared with 84% a year ago and the 88% average. Hot, dry weather aided the Kansas harvest, which reached 79% to move stay ahead of last year’s 66%. It trailed the 83% average.

Soft red winter wheat harvest in Illinois was 69% done, compared with 78% a year ago and the 80% average. Indiana’s harvest was 39% versus 49% a year ago and the 60% average.
