(AgWeb) – Given the wild spring and wacky weather, it’s no surprise to farmers that USDA expects prevent plant acre tallies to soar in 2019. While they won’t release final prevent plant numbers until later this fall, USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) has a running tally of prevent-plant acres.

According to Pro Farmer’s Jim Wiesemeyer, usually reliable sources detail prevented plant acres for corn as of early July were 7 million to 8 million acres, while soybeans were 2 million to 3 million acres.

“The total prevented plant tally for all crops [is] at 12.5 million acres,” he says. “Final amounts are expected to go higher, sources advise.”

For several weeks, USDA Undersecretary Bill Northey has said total prevented plant acres would likely go over 10 million acres. Meanwhile, USDA is expected this Thursday or Friday to release more information of importance to farmers.

USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) is taking additional steps to address this year’s rise in prevented planting claims, Wiesemeyer says.

“Normally, farmers are required to submit documentation to their county FSA office relative efforts made to plant the crop, such as fieldwork, purchase of seed and fertilizer and financing documents,” he explains. “If the county FSA committee views the supporting documentation as acceptable, the prevented planting request granted. For the 2019 crop year only, FSA is giving State Executive Directors the ability to determine if there has been widespread prevent planting in the state, and if so, county FSA committees can waive the requirement for producers to provide documentation of their intent to plant.”
