(IngredientNews) – With a government shutdown and lack of crop data from the USDA in Oct., ingredient buyers have been searching for some direction to hold them over until Nov.’s USDA crop reports. Bridging the gap, Stephen Nicholson, Chief Economist at International Food Products, and Dr. Chad Hart, Associate Professor of Economics at Iowa State University, weighed in on the current corn market and what to look for with the corn crop and corn sweetener prices in 2014 during a recent webinar presentation. View the presentation slides here or continue reading for highlights of his presentation.

Pricing Indications Will Depend Largely on Your 2013 Price

Before official price negotiations begin after Nov. USDA reports, buyers can look to these for pricing indications for 2014:

  • Liquid Corn Sweeteners:  down $3.00-$6.00 per CWT
  • Dextrose:  down $3.00-$6.00 per CWT
  • Corn Syrup Solids:  down $2.00-$4.00 per CWT
  • Maltodextrins:  down $2.00-$4.00 per CWT
  • Crystalline Fructose:  $4.00-$6.00 per CWT
  • PFP Corn Starch:  $4.00-$6.00 per CWT

Other Important Factors for 2014 Corn Sweetener Prices

  • 2013 business has been soft. Some major corn wet millers have seen substantial declines in volume.
  • While sugar prices are off their lows, cheap sugar is going to keep pressure on corn sweetener prices.
  • With the proposal to tax sugary beverages in Mexico aimed at soft drinks, U.S. High Fructose Corn Syrup exports may be affected.
  • Markets favoring soybeans in the short term and corn longer term.

Nicholson and Hart also discussed supply and demand concerns, production uncertainty for harvest time, and acreage allocation for 2014. For the full market report and charts from this exclusive webinar, please view the slides here.
