Corn Slips to 72% Good to Excellent

(Farm Futures) – U.S. corn’s condition slipped to 72% good to excellent from the previous week’s 73% in USDA’s latest weekly crop ratings released on Monday, with the amount in dent stage at 22% versus the 27% average.

Soybeans improved to 71% good to excellent from 70% the previous week.

Spring wheat harvest advanced to 17%, compared with the 33% average. In North Dakota, the largest producer, harvest was 6% versus 8% a year ago and the 28% average. The U.S. crop slipped to 68% good to excellent, down 2 points from the previous week, with North Dakota at 73%.

In Iowa, the top corn and soybean producer, corn slipped to 75% good to excellent from 76% while soybeans dropped to 73% from 75%. Below-average precipitation caused a statewide drop in soil moisture, particularly in the northwestern part.

For U.S. soybeans, 95% were blooming to match the average, while 83% were setting pods, ahead of the 79% average. In Iowa, 88% were at pod setting and 98%blooming, while in Illinois, 89% had set pods and 96% reached the blooming stage.

Spring wheat harvest at 17%
Spring wheat harvest was 17% done, with Washington the farthest along at 68%.  North Dakota was 6%, versus the 28% average and wheat there was unchanged at 83% good to excellent. The overall crop was rated 68% good to excellent.

North Dakota said rain helped row-crop development although it halted small grain harvest. Most rain amounts were ½ to 2 inches.

USDA discontinued the winter wheat harvest segment for the season. Harvest last week was 95% done and had finished in key states.

Cotton: 12% bolls open, 50% good to excellent
Bolls were open on 12% of the cotton and bolls had set on 88%. Both matched the averages. The crop was 50% good to excellent, down 2 points from a week ago.

Oats were 66% harvested, compared with the 76% average. Sorghum coloring was at 44% while 31% was mature, versus the 37% and 26% averages. It was unchanged at 59% good to excellent.

Rice was 7% harvested and 88% headed, versus the 11% and 81% averages and improved to 74% good to excellent.
