Corn and Soybeans: So Far, So Good

(Corn+Soybeandigest.com) – The first corn condition report was released May 29. It shows 79 of all the nation’s corn is in good and excellent condition. That’s better than in 2017 when 65% of all the corn was in good and excellent condition.

In Wisconsin, 90% of the corn is rated as good and excellent condition. Other states such as Minnesota is reporting 86% in good or excellent; 83% in Illinois; Iowa is reporting 82%; 78% in Indiana and 70% in Missouri.

Corn planted

Illinois and Missouri farmers are reporting they are finished with corn planting. According to the crop progress report, it shows 92% of the nation’s corn crop is in the ground. That’s two percent more than the four-year average of 90%. Last week, the report showed 81% of the corn crop had been planted.

Other states in the Midwest nearing the finish line include Iowa at 96%; Indiana at 95%; Minnesota and 93% and South Dakota at 91%.

Some states in the Midwest still trying to catch up are Ohio with 82% complete and Wisconsin with 81% finished. Meanwhile, Michigan is reporting only 64% and Pennsylvania farmers say 59% of the corn is planted.

Corn emerged

The crop progress report shows 72% of the corn planted has emerged across the nation. That’s up 3% from the four-year average of 69%. Last week, only 50% of the corn crop had emerged.

Missouri farmers say 91% of their corn has emerged, Illinois is reporting 89%; Nebraska and Indiana report 8%; and 77% of the corn has emerged in Iowa.

Meanwhile, some other states in the Midwest continue to lag, since planting was delayed. Minnesota and Ohio farmers say 66% of the corn crop has emerged. Wisconsin reports 48% and Michigan producers say about 40% has emerged. Only 34% has popped up in North Dakota and 32% in Pennsylvania.

Soybeans planted

As of May 27, the crop progress report shows 77% of the nation’s soybeans have been planted. That’s up from the four-year average of 62%. Last year, the nation had 65% of the crop planted at this time.

Illinois is eyeing the finish line with producers reporting 90% of the soybean planting complete. Indiana and Nebraska are reporting 87% complete. Iowa farmers say 81% and 80% of the crop is in the ground in Minnesota.

Meanwhile, some states in the Midwest are struggling to get soybeans in the ground. Michigan farmers say only 45% of the crop has been planted there. South Dakota producers say 61% of the soybean planting is finished followed by Wisconsin at 63% and Ohio stands at 67% complete.

Soybeans emerged

The soybean crop is ahead in of where it was last year at this time. The crop progress report shows 47% of the soybean crop has emerged. That’s up 15% from the fou- year average of 32%. Last week, only about a quarter of the crop had emerged.

Illinois is leading the way with 75% of the soybean crop emerging. Indiana producers say 63% of the crop has emerged; Nebraska farmers say 53% has emerged; Missouri reports 52%; and Iowa reports 44%.

Some states that had fallen behind in the Midwest include Minnesota at 29%; Michigan with 26%; Wisconsin at 25%; North Dakota reports 20% and South Dakota says 16% of the crop has emerged.
