(Wisconsin Ag Connection) –  Lawmakers in Washington D.C. are working on developing policy for the 2018 Farm Bill, which is due next year. House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway said developments in the Senate last week mean the Farm Bill process can move forward.

“Now there’s a questions mark that’s been eliminated and that was the mandatory spending cuts that were in the House version and those have gone away for the time being, we’ll be able to move forward with the Farm Bill without taking into consideration what we might have not have to do with that issue,” Conaway said. “So, that’s another questions answered moving forward.”

Conaway plans for the farm bill process in the House to wrap up within the next couple of months. He added there are some hard decisions that remain.

“You know, I’ve been talking about it tongue-in-cheek, talking told folks about the honeymoon period I’ve been in the last two years and nine months, because I haven’t made anybody mad. Now, I’m about to approach that part of my business where I’m going to make people mad and disappoint them because we’re going to have to make choices, and some of those will be very difficult,” Conaway said.
