August Milk Production Grew 2 Percent From 2016

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) – Milk production in the United States during August totaled 18.1 billion pounds, up 2.0 percent from August 2016.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.26 billion pounds, but was one of just four states that had lower production compared to last year. Utah had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 194 million pounds of milk in August, up 10.2 percent from the same period last year.

Production per cow averaged 1,919 pounds, 24 pounds above the same period last year.

The number of milk cows on farms was 9.41 million head, 71,000 head more than August 2016, but unchanged from July 2017.
